Techniques for planting and caring for Dendrobium orchids to bloom on time
The pots of Dendrobium orchids are being nurtured.
Although the Dendrobium is a wild orchid with good vitality and high adaptability, to ensure the plant grows best and blooms on time, you need to pay attention to the following basic techniques.
Selecting and processing Dendrobium orchids
First, you need to pay attention to the selection of varieties and orchid treatment before planting because these are two key factors that determine whether the dendrobium orchid can quickly develop and adapt to the new environment or not.
Choose orchid varieties :
- Choose a tree with large, plump stems, not crushed, worm-free or fungus-free.
- Prioritize the body with many dormant eyes
Treatment of Dendrobium orchid before planting :
- Wash the seedlings under running water, soak in disinfectant such as Physan 20 or diluted Benkana for 15 - 20 minutes.
- Soak the seedlings in a root stimulant solution, for example 1 ml B1 + 3 drops Atonik + 1g N3M + 1 liter of water.
- Hang the orchid in a cool place for 1-2 days before planting or grafting.
How to grow Dendrobium orchid in pots or on wood
If you do not know how to properly plant Dendrobium in pots/graft wood, please refer to the detailed instructions below.
Step 1: Prepare the orchid growing medium
- Choose a substrate with good drainage such as wood, coconut fiber, charcoal, pumice, coconut fiber,...
- Clean the growing medium to prevent pests, fungi and diseases.
Step 2: Plant the orchid in a pot
- Put charcoal in the bottom of the pot, place the plant in the center of the pot, use coconut fiber to fix the base.
- Spread some coconut husks, coconut fiber + thin layer of moss on the surface of the pot to keep moist.
- Use a spray bottle to lightly spray water on the leaves to keep them moist, do not spray directly on the roots or base of the orchid.
Step 3: Graft the orchid onto the wood
- Place the orchid seedling on the wood so that the base of the plant is close to the wooden post, the stem facing the light.
- Use zip ties, wire or U-pins to secure the tree, avoiding damaging the trunk and roots.
- Hang orchids in a cool place.
Proper care of Dendrobium orchid
Proper care of the orchid is the deciding factor in whether the orchid can grow well, thrive and bloom beautifully or not. Please refer to the instructions below.
Watering properly :
- Maintain watering twice a day to help the plant retain moisture.
- Do not water the top of the tree, reduce watering frequency during rainy season.
Fertilizer for each stage :
- Growth stage (April - September): Use NPK 30-10-10 or NPK 20-20-20 fertilizer, can be combined with organic fertilizer to help the plant grow best.
- Flowering preparation stage (October - December): NPK 6-30-30 fertilizer to stimulate buds. When the tree loses all its leaves, stop fertilizing.
Orchid pruning:
- Regularly trim dry, rotten roots, wilted, yellow leaves to prevent fungus and disease.
- Clean the growing medium every 1-2 months with Physan, Ridomil Gold,...
Disease prevention for orchids:
- Common diseases such as soft rot, leaf spots, mealybugs,...
- Do not water too much, especially at night.
- Spray antifungal drugs such as Ridomil, Aliette,... every 1-2 months.
- Dilute the fertilizer, do not apply directly to the leaves as it will easily burn the leaves.
Technique to stimulate Dendrobium orchid to bloom on time
If you want your orchid to bloom in time for late spring - early winter (Lunar New Year), please refer to the following flower stimulation technique.
Flowering time :
-
November
Perform water tightening - rest :
- Stop fertilizing, reduce watering from 2-3 days/time to 1 week/time and then stop completely.
- Once the tree has lost all its leaves, keep the tree completely dry for about 10 days.
Stimulate buds :
- November: Early December
- Flower stimulation with KNO3: Dilute with a dosage of 6g/8 liters of water, spray on the trunk and base of the tree every 5 days, spray about 2-3 times.
- Stimulate flowering with Atonik: Dilute 1ml Atonik/1 liter of water + 1ml B1/1 liter of water, spray every 5 days.
Care for the orchid after it buds :
- After about 15 - 20 days of stimulation, you will see flower buds starting to sprout along the stem.
